(multiple area locations; marvelousmarket.com). This local chain is best known for its bakery—the chocolate-chip cookies ($1.79) alone are worth the trip. But when dinner calls, look toward the refrigerated shelves, where the gourmet market offers quick and relatively healthy premade meals—the diverse selection ranges from sushi to spaghetti and meatballs.

We like the Thai spring-roll salad ($6.99)—a deconstructed take on the tasty rolls minus the greasy fried wrapper. Steamed dumplings ($6.29), nearly translucent and filled with veggies, are another hit, as are the hearty turkey chili with kidney beans ($6.29) and the chicken quesadilla—surprisingly crisp even after a quick zap in the microwave.
