100 Very Best (2007)

Why the ranking? Wasn't it enough to offer a list of the area's 100 best restaurants and award them stars? Why this year did we rank them from 1 to 100?

Last year we tweaked our star system to include half stars to further help you gauge a restaurant's worth. This year's numbers are another way of helping you sort through a crowded and increasingly competitive field.

Everybody knows that Citronelle is a great restaurant. But how much better is it than, say, the Inn at Little Washington? Six spots, by our reckoning. The young, ambitious Komi clocks in at number ten-five spots ahead of Le Paradou, whose chef, Yannick Cam, has been a fixture in Washington since Reagan rode into town . . . which was before Komi's chef, Johnny Monis, was born. There are lots of two-star restaurants on our list, but not all two-stars are equal. 43 spots separate Cashion's from Gom Ba Woo.

Consider this a snapshot, a picture of the topography as it looks to us after hundreds of meals. Your picture may vary. That's part of the fun, too.
