Dirt Cheap Eats 2008: Oohhs & Aahhs

Oohhs & Aahhs (1005 U St., NW; 202-667-7142). You don’t need Southern roots to relate to the comfort fare at this soul-food kitchen. You do need to make decisions, because just about everything is tempting. Crisp-battered fried chicken wings with moist cornbread ($8.95)? Beautifully broiled whiting with candied yams ($8.95)? Meaty beef ribs ($15.95), creamy mac and cheese ($3.50 to $4.50), or the delicious Cajun-spiced turkey chop ($13.95)? If hunger should strike in the wee hours, fried chicken and waffles ($10.95)—served Friday and Saturday night from midnight to 5—is the go-to plate. Open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner.
