Taqueria Distrito Federal (3463 14th St., NW, 202-276-7331; 805 Kennedy St., NW, 202-545-6990). The original 14th Street location of this Mexican taqueria remains transportive, thanks to the festive colors, the Spanish-speaking staff, and the smoking chilies that can cause a sweet burn in your throat as you wait for your order. Standout tacos ($2.50 each) include the paprika-spiked chorizo and the sweet, smoky carnitas.

Among the burritos ($7), we favor the barbacoa res, the beef made richer by long-simmered tomato and pepper flavors. Equally delicious was a breaded-chicken sandwich piled high with queso blanco and avocado ($7). The new location in DC’s Petworth has yet to achieve the consistency—or the atmosphere—of the original. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
