The $17 appetizer of fried Ipswich clams at the seafood restaurant Kinkead’s is close to perfect: The clams are crisp, chewy, greaseless, and accompanied by house-made tartar sauce and frizzled lemon slices. At the much more casual Georgetown fish shack Tackle Box, fried clams—full-belly in summer—also make a stellar appearance in a pile with tartar sauce or in a made-for-the-restaurant bun as a clam roll (each $12).

On a recommendation for W's Cheap Eats, I went to Tackle Box expecting great New England-style seafood that wouldn't break the bank--and sure enough, that's what I got. While I went for the Maine Meal (the $13 option), I could've gone with the $9 More ...

Terrible Fried Seafood a Bust

If you want fried seafood, might as well go to Arthur Treacher's or bring home Mrs. Pauls. The Washingtonian touts the star chef from Hook as overseeing this place, but he left Hook last summer!
