Why go: This cramped walkup dishes up the best Trinidadian cooking in the area.

What to get: “Bussup shut,” a hot round of roti, a thick pancake of a wrapper, shredded with a spatula (so it resembles a “busted-up shirt”) and topped with spicy goat or chicken curry; goat or chicken roti; stewed oxtail with rice and red peas; callaloo, a soothing collard soup; house-made fruit drinks including ginger-pineapple, sorrel, and peanut punch.

Best for: A quick lunch so hearty and satisfying that you may be tempted to skip dinner; an authentic taste of the islands without leaving home.

Insider tip: Portions are so generous that it’s hard to think about dessert, but if you have room, pay a visit to the nearby Crown Bakery (5329 Georgia Ave., NW; 202-291-3009) for Trinidadian pastries and cakes, including buttery biscuit cakes and currant rolls.

Open daily for lunch and dinner.
