Luna Grill and Diner

A funky Dupont diner.

The Food: Though the menu is broken down simply (burgers, sandwiches, entrees, pastas) don’t underestimate the eclecticism of its offerings. There’s everything from a Red, White and Blue burger with bacon and blue cheese or a Pittsburgh barbecue sandwich to comfort food plates of meatloaf or roast turkey with stuffing. Vegetarians have lots of choices: a California veggie pasta includes sun-dried tomato and artichoke hearts, eggplant parm is smothered in marinara, and each weeknight features a “green plate” special. For breakfast and brunch, there’s cinnamon-raisin French toast, eggs benedict, a breakfast burrito, and granola with yogurt.

The Scene: Luna is small, so it quickly fills up during prime times, especially lunch and weekend brunch. Black-and-white tiles, Christmas lights (months after the holidays) and walls painted with scenes of the sun and solar system give this three-decade-old, family-owned restaurant a homey feel. Outdoor seating is available on a patio on 18th Street, just head through the kitchen (literally) to get there.

What’s Nearby: Luna Grill’s Dupont Circle location makes it easily accessible by Metro (red line) and within short walking distance to lots of local and chain boutiques, hotels, and tourist stops like the Phillips Collection . In the evening, customers are steps from bars and clubs, including the Big Hunt, Gazuza, and the Afterwords Cafe at Kramerbooks.

Insider Tips: Consider this a diner’s happy hour: On weekdays from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, get a salad, one of three entrees, and a dessert for $13.95. On Mondays and Tuesdays, pastas are half price after 5 PM. Though reservations aren’t taken, you can call ahead to have your name added to a wait list.
