Dirt Cheap Eats 2009: Haydee’s

Overflowing plates, a mariachi band, and Christmas lights make entering this DC canteen feel like you’re walking into a party.

Start your fiesta with a pitcher of margaritas ($18.95) and a plate of fried plantains ($4.95) caramelized in their own sugar so they’re slightly crispy outside. Then dig into a sizzling plate of chicken fajitas ($10.95), steak or chicken tacos Mexicanos ($7.95), or a chimichanga ($6.99). Don’t bother with the likes of Buffalo wings or salmon—better to stick to dishes you’d expect from a restaurant airing futbol and Telemundo soaps.

Open Monday through Wednesday for dinner, Thursday through Sunday for lunch and dinner.
