After years of watching the price of blue crabs climb, we couldn’t believe our luck when we came across steamed crabs for $1 each at the White House farmers market (810 Vermont Ave., NW). The crabs, sold by Buster’s Seafood, are fished from the York River in Virginia and sell out fast—they’re usually gone in an hour and a half at the Thursday-afternoon market. The crabs aren’t sorted by specific size—“They’re like the good Lord gave them to us,” says Paige Hogge, who helps her husband, owner Jimmy Hogge—but are at least 5½ inches wide. The deal also can be found at Arlington’s Courthouse market (N. Courthouse Rd. and N. 14th St.) on Saturdays and the Dupont Circle market (20th St., NW, between Massachusetts Ave. and Q St.) on Sundays.
