FILM:
Grab a blanket, and maybe some bug spray, for tonight’s Crystal Screen outdoor movie selection, District 9. In this 2009 Academy Award-nominated film, aliens are forced to live in slum-like conditions in Johannesburg, South Africa. In the courtyard at 1850 Bell Street. Free, film begins at sundown.

Tuesday, June 28
THEATER: Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Next to Normal makes its Kennedy Center debut tonight, returning to Washington for the first time since it was workshopped at Arena Stage in 2008. The emotional powerhouse tells the story of a suburban family struggling with loss and mental illness. Tickets ($35 to $120) can be purchased at the Kennedy Center’s Web site. 7:30 PM.

Wednesday, June 29
MUSIC:
Blackberry Winter, the collective-turned-band that wrote all the music for the Academy Award-nominated film Winter’s Bone, is dropping by the Rock and Roll Hotel for a live performance of the complete score. Tickets ($15) can be purchased at the Rock and Roll Hotel’s Web site or at the door ($18). 8 PM.

Thursday, June 30
SIGNING:
Washington Post food and travel editor Joe Yonan will be signing copies of his new cookbook, Serve Yourself: Nightly Adventures in Cooking for One, at Cities Restaurant & Lounge. Mingle with other singles while sipping on specially priced Square One Organic Vodka, Honest Tea cocktails, wine, and beer. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will also be served, and attendees will receive a $10 coupon for future visits to Cities. All proceeds will benefit FRESHFARM Markets, the nonprofit behind so many of our favorite local farmers’ markets.
