A special election will be held on November 6 to choose a new DC City Council chairman after Kwame Brown resigned last week in the wake of bank fraud charges being brought against him.
At the moment, Ward 3 council member Mary Cheh is acting chair. On Wednesday she will preside over a meeting of the full council during which they will select an interim
chair, who is expected to be at-large member Phil Mendelson. All council members are eligible to run for chairman, and the winner of the November 6 vote will serve the remainder of
Brown’s term, which is about two years.
Mayor Vincent Gray is still under investigation by
the US Attorney’s Office. There is speculation he could be indicted on
campaign finance charges.
Should Gray be indicted and resign, whoever wins the November 6
special election would succeed him as mayor.
