While in town to promote Victoria’s Secret’s new Easy bra collection, Victoria’s Secret Angel Martha Hunt spent a day at the Victoria’s Secret store in Tysons Corner. Washingtonian caught up with Hunt in conjunction with her visit, and not only found out that her dream job, if she wasn’t an Angel, would be in journalism (“I always loved creative writing,” she says) but that like any career, being a successful super model has its ups and downs.
Here are a few things Hunt has to say about what it’s really like to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel.
You’re constantly being touched by strangers.
“You need to get used to people always being around and touching you,” says Hunt. “Whether it’s hair and makeup touch ups or a stylist adjusting something on your wardrobe. So it take some time to get comfortable with that.”
You can’t make plans.
“It’s hard for me to plan anything,” says Hunt. “I can be pretty flaky because jobs come in last minute and I have to cancel plans all the time. I can literally need to leave the country at any moment and have to cancel dinner plans.”
You get to travel all over the world.
“My favorite part about being a model has been the world experiences that I couldn’t have gotten any other way,” says Hunt. “I always wanted to travel when I was young so I’ve been very fortunate to travel and meet people from all types of cultures.”
You have to work—hard—on your body.
“I have to work hardest at physically maintaining my body,” says Hunt. Though she says that the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is rewarding and a chance to shine, “the most challenging part is the weeks leading up to the show—how clean you’re eating and how hard you’re working out.”
You’ll get asked about your diet and exercise regime. All. The. Time.
“I get asked this question all the time from friends and colleagues,” says Hunt. “I started using more weights this year and for me that’s really helped out my body. Everyone is different—some need more cardio, some work better with resistance bands—I’ve found that weights have been very helpful for me.”
You can celebrate the fact that fashion is getting more comfortable.
“These days, style in general has become more casual and comfortable,” says Hunt. “Women are learning that we want to be comfortable while at work and while traveling and these bras are perfect for that.” Of the new Easy bra, Hunt says: “It’s perfect for me because I’m always traveling or working, and when I get home I just want to chill and have a night in with my girlfriends or my boyfriend. I like to wear a bra and feel sexy but this gives me support without digging into my skin because there are not any hooks or wires.”
