Spine surgery can be done many ways, but in 2017, the best way is less invasive. Dr. O’Brien’s practice focuses on effective surgery with minimal impact on patients’ lives. He has practiced in Washington, DC since 2007 and endeavors to treat his patients like family.

“When recommending surgery to a person, it’s important to consider what you would want if the roles were reversed.” As a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. O’Brien treats patients in need of spine surgery, or those who have had surgery that was not effective.

“My training at Johns Hopkins prepared me to help those who have complex cases. At this point, I’ve refined what I learned at Hopkins to be minimally invasive too.” Dr. O’Brien joined OrthoBethesda in 2017 and founded the Washington Spine and Scoliosis Institute in 2017 with other members of the practice. He has been published in a variety of medical journals including Spine, the Journal of Neurosurgery Spine, Neurosurgery, Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Current Orthopaedic Practice.
