Made in Hong Kong Film Festival: Concerto of the Bully
In this “escapist fantasy on the power of music and dreams” (Edmund Lee, South China Morning Post), a street punk (Ronald Cheng) kidnaps the girlfriend of a rising pop star (Cherry Ngan)—only to discover that she is the one and only Hit Girl, an internet singing sensation. Captive on a remote fishing boat, she tries to pass the time and calm her captor through music lessons. It turns out that this bumbling bad guy secretly has a musical soul. Director Fung Chih-Chiang honed his comedy chops as a screenwriter for Stephen Chow (Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle). They are fully on display in this film, which was nominated for four Hong Kong Film Awards. (Dir.: Fung Chih-Chiang, Hong Kong, 2017, 95 minutes, DCP, Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles)
