John Solomon, investigative reporter and
puddle jumper of many news organizations, is rolling out Washington
Guardian, a new muckraking
news site. Solomon’s name doesn’t appear in the first mockups
of the site, which is slated to launch in a few weeks, but his
fingers are all over it.
Washington Guardian is part of Packard Media Group,
which Solomon started in 2009 with two other journalists. The group, of
which Solomon is president, has been publishing Energy
Guardian. We couldn’t reach Solomon for comment, but a source with
Washington Guardian confirmed the new site is his baby.
The promo for Washington Guardian promises to resurrect Sam Donaldson, whom Solomon lauds for shouting loudly at presidents as they boarded planes. He promises to bring back “that golden age
of accountability journalism.” Jack Anderson’s “Washington Merry-Go-Round” is his model, along with Senator Bill Proxmire’s Golden Fleece Award.
Solomon has worked for many years at the AP, briefly the Washington Post, served as executive editor of the Washington Times in 2008, moved briefly to run the Center for Public Integrity and then joined the Daily Beast. He scored an interview with
the New York maid who accused Dominique Strauss-Kahn of rape and spun it into a book: DSK: The Scandal That Brought Down Dominique Straus-Kahn.
The first taste of Washington Guardian will be bitter for the 13 US Senate candidates listed as having had past bankruptcies
or criminal records, according to this article by Jilly Badanes.
