Hotel George

The Hotel George was the first boutique-style hotel on Capitol Hill. The historic 1928 building, formerly the Bellevue Hotel, was renovated into the Hotel George in 1998 and then became a Kimpton brand in 2002.

As with all Kimpton hotels, Hotel George has a theme; its story is “Style, Leadership & Art.” Style is apparent in its snazzy, metallic entrance off E Street as well as in its glass, stainless steel, and coral stone lobby. Leadership and art are covered by modern takes on portraits of President George Washington. The collection includes Steve Kaufman’s portrait of Washington as well as rainbow dollar bill portraits behind the front desk.

The hotel’s color scheme is black, white, and red all over, with emphasis on the white and the bright. Two-story windows run all along the lobby.

Hotel George has that Kimpton-brand vintage chic going on, but its feel is a bit more professional and less playful than other Kimptons—its Capitol Hill location probably playing a part. The decor is best described as sophisticated history meets upbeat business vibe.

Art continues up to the guest rooms, with colorful accents and a painting of Washington on Mount Rushmore above each bed. Colors are a bit subdued, with a base of beige and cream. The bathrooms are white marble with black granite countertops and feature a wall speaker for television audio and a separate bathtub and shower.

All rooms come with a free yoga channel and a free yoga kit, which includes a mat, block, and strap. Guests also have the option of booking a cardio room with a stationary bike. The renovated fitness center is another great option, with locker rooms and individual steam rooms.

The hotel’s restaurant, Bistro Bis, serves French classics with a modern twist and is ranked in Washingtonian’s 100 Very Best Restaurants.
