Topaz Hotel

This 99-room hotel hosts mostly business travelers who know Kimpton hotels. Topaz, the first Kimpton in DC—there are now three in Dupont Circle—opened in 2003. True to its name, the lobby is done up in tranquil blues, greens, and exotic patterns.

The Topaz Bar is cozy, intimate, and known among locals; it hosts comedy nights and an open mic on Fridays. Overnight guests will find lit candles and a breakfast buffet set out on the bar. Happy hours are on Wednesdays.

The hotel’s furnishings are sleek and futuristic; the small, not-so-new lobby was renovated from an old apartment building. Topaz doesn’t have a gym, but guests can get passes to the YMCA around the corner for $5. (Join the Kimpton InTouch Program, and the passes are free.) Or, pay $30 more for one of the specialty rooms with workout equipment—a stationary bicycle, elliptical trainer, or yoga gear.

Insider tip: To find deals and promotions, consider joining the free Kimpton In Touch Guest Loyalty program, which gives members perks such as complimentary room wi-fi, breakfast, and mini-bar freebies, and which allows you to set preferences for all your stays at Kimpton hotels. It’s free to sign up here.
