Inspired by the Big Screen

With the release of the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, we predict martial arts will again be a hot activity this fall. There are many karate, tae kwon do, and tai chi classes to choose from for your little ninjas. The releases of movies Annie and Into the Woods will no doubt have young singers belting out catchy Broadway tunes. Find drama, dance, voice/singing, musical theatre, and more on Rocket, too. Dolphin Tale 2 will inspire a whole new generation of scientists. We predict the STEM trend will continue through the end of 2014. Check out the Rocket for classes and camps focused on science, technology, engineering, and math, they can be a great supplement to school-based learning. It will also resonate with anyone who has overcome a challenge. And the Rocket prides itself on great offerings for kids of all abilities and includes many special needs classes for therapeutic horseback, sports, music, social groups, and more.

Create, Make, Do, Hack!

Last year Maker Faires swept through Washington, Northern Virginia, and suburban Maryland to the delight of kids and adults alike. Featuring projects created by artists, inventors, crafters, hackers, and do-it-yourselfers, local kids were inspired to explore their curiosity and create. With the opening of Make Meaning in Bethesda, and the coming of the KID Museum—the County’s first dedicated maker space—your kids will be doing, making, and creating in no time. And don’t miss the Silver Spring Maker Faire on September 14.

Get Active

In the US, childhood obesity rates have tripled in the past three decades. One in three kids is overweight or obese—even higher in African American and Hispanic communities. Our kids are headed for a life of chronic diseases, including heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, asthma, diabetes, and more. Everyone from Michelle Obama at the White House with the Let’s Move campaign on down is advocating we get kids moving and eating healthy from a young age. But constantly nagging our kids does not lead to behavioral changes. For older kids and teens, boot camps and personal training from companies like Launch Sport Performance (Rockville), Elite Athlete Training Services (EATS), and Fitness for Health (Rockville) are all the rage. For the toddler set, check out gyms like My Gym, The Little Gym, and Gymboree. Fall and winter are the perfect times to pick up an indoor activity like cooking—we love the programs offered by Tiny Chefs throughout metro DC and Creative Kids Kitchen (Arlington).
