Ski Days to Remember

Mark your calendar for some of ski season’s best day trips.

December 24, Skiing Santas at Camelback: The first 75 people who arrive wearing Santa suits receive a free lift ticket; the next 75 receive a half-price lift ticket. January 19, Wisp Superpipe Classic: The region’s top skiers and snowboarders perform aerial feats off the towering snow walls at the Mid-Atlantic’s premier Superpipe event. Entry fee is $20, and the competition starts at 1 pm. 301-387-4911; skiwisp.com.

January 25–27, Wounded Warriors Weekend at Wintergreen Resort: Wintergreen Adaptive Skiing hosts this event, which helps disabled veterans learn to ski and snowboard using a variety of adaptive techniques and specialized equipment. It’s the largest Wounded Warriors ski program in the Mid-Atlantic and an exciting and inspirational weekend. 434-325-2007; skiwas.org.

January 26 and 27, Canaan Valley Telemark Workshop: Telemark skiing is one of the original forms of skiing. With tele-skis, you can ski flats, hills, and the backcountry. The North American Telemark Organization holds a two-day workshop ($190) for beginner to advanced tele-skiers in Canaan Valley. 800-835-3404; telemarknato.com.

January 27
, Ski Roundtop Cardboard Derby: Teams of up to six race down the slick lanes of the resort’s tubing park in homemade cardboard contraptions. Teams that complete the race in their “vehicle” are judged on spirit, construction, originality, and costumes. 717-432-9631; skiroundtop.com.

February 9–17
, Winterfest at Seven Springs: The weeklong celebration includes a parade, speed skiing, tubing races, freestyle skiing and snowboarding, ice sculpting, a crafts show, and nightly entertainment. 814-352-7777; 7springs.com.

March 8 and 9
, Pond Skim at Whitetail: Get ready to get wet. While temps often reach the low fifties in March, the water is still icy. In this Springfest event, skiers—often wearing costumes or a swimsuit—try to skim all the way across a pond without falling or sinking. 717- 328-9400; skiwhitetail.com.

March 14–16, Snowy Luau at Timberline: Finish the ski season Hawaiian style. The festival includes downhill races, a luau with a pig roast and bonfire, Hawaiian music, and Polynesian dancers.
