A selection of videos from the Videofreex archive, which chronicled the social and political upheaval of the 1960s and 70s, is showing at DC Arts Center. Some of the topics covered include the anti-Vietnam protests in DC and the downtown-New York arts culture. 7:30.
Thursday, January 20
Elvis hasn’t left the building yet—at least not at the National Portrait Gallery, where tribute artist Scot Bruce is performing as part of the museum’s Cultures in Motion series. The performance is narrated by E. Warren Perry Jr., who co-curated the “Elvis at 21” exhibition that features photos by Alfred Wertheimer. Friday, January 21
Preview the Art Museum of the Americas’ new exhibition, “Wrestling With the Image: Caribbean Interventions,” Friday evening. The show compiles contemporary art from 12 countries in the Caribbean region, including photography, video, sculpture, and installations. A talk about the exhibit begins at 5:30, and the opening reception starts at 6:30.
Saturday, January 22
Richard Panek, author of The 4 Percent Universe: Dark Matter, Dark Energy, and the Race to Discover the Rest of Reality, is speaking and signing books at Politics and Prose. The book follows the story of scientists who have tried to solve the mysteries of the universe’s unknown corners. 6 PM.
Sunday, January 23
Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof’s latest film, The White Meadows, screens at the Freer Gallery’s Meyer Auditorium Sunday afternoon. The surrealist drama, a selection at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, is showing as part of the Global Lens 2011 series. 2 PM.
