MOVIES: For the next couple of Mondays, the
National Theatre will be screening Jimmy Stewart movies. The series kicks off with perhaps his most
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, which seems like an appropriate place to start for the Fourth. The movie was nominated
for 11 Oscars and helped made Stewart a national star. Free. 6:30 PM.
Tuesday, July 2
MUSIC: Jammin’ Java is hosting the preliminary rounds of its ninth
Mid-Atlantic Band Battle. Each night this week you can check out six up-and-coming local bands, who will each
play 15-minute sets for the right to compete for a $2,500 prize and a headlining show
at the club. Crowd response plays an important role in determining who wins, so practice
your cheering. If you haven’t been to Jammin’ Java in a while, now’s a good time to
return—a brand new bar is opening in the lobby. Tickets ($10) are available online.
Wednesday, July 3
BAR CRAWL: You didn’t think the bars in
Dupont would let July Fourth come and go without having a ridiculous bar crawl, did you?
Okay, good. ’Merica yourself up with red, white, and blue and tiny flags, and drink
to excess at 20 Dupont bars, including Mackey’s and Front Page (where you can get
your wristband), Bread & Brew, Irish Whiskey, the Gryphon, Bottom Line, Cafe Citron,
and more. Patriotic beads are included, and a wristband gets you $2 Coors Lights,
$3 Blue Moons, and other drink specials at each bar. Tickets (starting at $10) are
available online. 5:30 PM.
Thursday, July 4
AMERICA’S BIRTHDAY: Happy birthday to Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty, the loveliest couple I know. The standard
“A Capital Fourth,” the PBS special people who live in places where it rains on the Fourth will be watching,
stars Tom Bergeron, Barry Manilow, two
American Idol winners I haven’t heard of (because that’s how we do things),
Glee’s Darren Criss, and the National Symphony Orchestra. If you want a chance of seeing
anything, hit the Mall way before 8 PM and come with some patience stored up. Free.
