Dr. Shawl is a world-renowned interventional cardiologist currently, Director of Interventional Cardiology at Adventist Healthcare White Oak Medical Center, Maryland, Clinical Professor of Medicine at George Washington University Medical School, Washington, DC and Visiting Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Zulekha Hospital, Dubai.
Dr. Shawl received his medical degree from Government Medical College, Srinagar and then completed his residency in England. In 1977, Dr. Shawl moved to the United States and completed his cardiology fellowship at The Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington DC.
Dr. Shawl brought the military into the ‘balloon age’ when he performed the first Coronary Angioplasty in the United States Military (Army, Navy, and Air Force) at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1981. He learned this procedure in Switzerland from Dr. Andeas Gruentzig who invented coronary angioplasty procedure in 1977. While he has lectured widely on every topic of Interventional Cardiology in the world, he has been a leading proponent and innovator in the development of the percutaneous approach (known as ‘Shawl Technique’) to cardiopulmonary bypass support (CPS) in “High Risk Angioplasty and Cardiac Arrest” performing the first percutaneous bypass-supported high risk coronary intervention in the world at Washington Adventist Hospital in 1988.
Dr. Shawl is a member of the renowned International Gruentzig Society and has performed over 22,000 interventional procedures over the past 40 years.Dr. Shawl has authored over 150 leading peer reviewed articles, abstracts, editorials and book chapters. He has also published a book entitled “Supported Complex and High-Risk Coronary Angioplasty”. Fayaz Shawl Philanthropic foundation provides free cardiac care to overseas patients in Dubai and Kashmir who cannot afford to pay.
