Dirt Cheap Eats 2008: Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe

Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe (2150 N. Culpeper St., Arlington; 703-527-8394). Step into this German/European bakery when you’re craving carbs and comfort. Sandwiches such as the lean pastrami ($6.50) are satisfying, and the cookies, tortes, strudels, and breads—many made with German flour—are plenty tempting. Try one of the first-rate German sausages available each day, served warm on house-made buns and topped with mustard and sauerkraut. We especially like the bauernwurst ($6.25), a flavorful pork-and-beef wurst studded with mustard seeds. Open daily for breakfast and lunch.
