Notes From the Field: Rustik Tavern

Our critics give new restaurants a quick look and report back with their first impressions.

The food skews Mediterranean at Rustik Tavern, which opened last September in Bloomingdale, and the vibe is decidedly cool. On our initial visit, the hipster waiters did a decent job of serving a diverse crowd that mirrors the neighborhood. The menu turned up a lovely bowl of roasted lamb and spiced potatoes served with house-made pita. An earthy and surprisingly elegant navy-bean soup was beautifully garnished with a splash of orange chorizo oil. (Like most things, the soup can be modified for vegetarians.) A nut-studded kale salad also hit the spot. But the pizza makers are still working out some kinks, such as flour-caked and under-cooked crusts. Still, this is a great place to have a glass of wine and a bite, and there’s nothing wrong with those pizzas that can’t be fixed.
