The Cupcake Cup: Georgetown Cupcake vs. Furin's
Help us vote for the best cupcake in Washington.
Things are starting to get real, folks, as cupcake giants go up against one another in the Sweet Sixteen voting around. Today we have two Georgetown institutions that will have to battle it out. Meanwhlie, Fancy Cakes by Leslie won over Heidelberg; and Curbside Cupcakes is taking on Baked & Wired here. Click below for this afternoon's match up.
Georgetown Cupcake: This cupcakery is one of the grandaddies of the exploding cupcake trend in Washington. The sisters behind the operation give away one cupcake flavor for free every day (follow their Twitter to find out which one). Favorite flavors include peanut-butter fudge, key lime, and plain old chocolate.
Furin's: This Georgetown cafe claims to serve cupcakes that are "bigger and better than ANY other cupcake in Georgetown." Try one of the (admittedly massive) cupcake flavors like chocolate or strawberry shortcake and decide for yourself.
This poll will stay open until 2 PM on Friday.
*To help keep this contest fair, we've elected to use an IP address-based poll. This means that if you are voting from an office or network setting, not everybody will be able to vote. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we hope you'll encourage coworkers to vote from their home computer.
I make cakes for a living, so I was really excited to taste Georgetown Cupcakes to see how they compare compared to others. Before you continue to read, I should say... I like SWEET cupcakes. Georgetown cupcakes were not good. I purchased a box of 12 different cupcakes...the only one worthy of any raves was the pb chocolate chip. The rest were lacking flavor and soo much icing. The icing wasn’t sweet (which I know a lot of people like that fact) and the chocolate icing tasted like I was eating a semisweet chocolate chip. I bought them Friday night and by Sunday afternoon they were unedible. They were so dry when I purchased them...they were like rocks by Sunday. Terrible.

There is this cute little Ice cream parlor in Dupont, right on Connecticut Ave, named Larrys. They do baked goods as well. I must say Larry’s makes the best cup cakes! Compared to gerogetown and hello cupcake!

Georgetown Cupcakes are inferior. Their flavors sound great, but their execution is poor. Their frostings are overly sweet and poorly mixed. Then you add in their prices in comparison to their minute size. Not worth the trip. The cake portion itself tastes like a Betty Crocker cake mix - which is OK, but you can do better yourself at home and get 24 for the price you pay for one at Georgetown Cupcakes. Skip that shop.

GEORGETOWN CUPCAKE IS SOO OVERRATED! And really, do they need any more publicity?? Furin’s is soo much better! VOTE FOR THE LITTLE GUY!

Quality over quantity. Georgetown Cupcake uses top-of-the-line ingredients, and even though they’re smaller than the average American cupcake, their price and the cake itself reflects the difference.
Case in point - no other strawberry cupcake in town can begin to compare to theirs. GC is popular for many reasons, not just the name.

I do not get why everyone is fascinated with Georgetown Cupcakes? Furins is a great bakery that has been around forever and is a small family owned business, their cupcakes are huge and you get way more bang for your buck if you really want a good cupcake. 2 people can even split them and they are every bit as delicious (if not more) as any other cupcake out there. I think with GC you just pay more for the name, which in my mind is crazy. I voted for Furins for sure.

Whenever I visit Washington, I bring home several pink boxes on the plane. My neighbors in Atlanta love Georgetown Cupcake - every family has favorites and mine is always whatever I tried last! Really - they are all delicious!

IN THIS ECONOMY ONLY A FOOL WOULD PAY MORE FOR LESS!!!! That is what you get from Georgetown Cupcakes. Furin’s Cupcakes are not ONLY bigger, but a much better value.

The quality of a perfect cupcake is not found and should not be judged only by how large it can be. The perfect cupcake is a careful blend of fresh ingredients, complimentary flavors, and the ability to distribute those flavors in just a few bits. Georgetown Cupcake accomplishes this perfection and much more. The standard offerings are basic - not too over the top. They don’t combine too many flavors in one cupcake. The treat is the perfect size. Less is definitely more. Four normal size bites and one is in heaven. My favorites are Vanilla Squared and Red Velvet.
