We staked out the newly opened DC outpost of South African chicken chain Nando's Peri-Peri (819 Seventh St., NW; 202-898-1225) to find out what diners thought of the grilled birds, fiery sauces, and the sangria (a.k.a. "red Sprite").

I have gone twice -- the mushroom/halloumi sandwich is great and so is the squash side. Make sure and call ahead for take-out though. The first time I went it was 45 minutes from when I entered the door and when I got my food -- and that was for takeout! Granted, it was during the first week, so with any hope it has gotten better.

I went here about a month ago and really enjoyed the food. I think there are two tests to any chicken joing:
1) How moist is the chicken, was it overcooked?
2) How unique was the chicken ... could you get it at home?
On both front’s, Nando’s passed with flying colors. The chicken was not overcooked (something all too common in area restaurants) and it was moist and clearly high quality. As for unique, the sauces are fantastic and a perfect compliment to a well cooked chicken. I had the hottest sauce possible and tried my friend’s who had the mild lemon and herb sauce. All very good.
The sides were actually pretty good too, but not as good as the chicken.
