Nobody ever said doughnut derbying was a perfect science. While Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken is due to debut this week, its opening date has been up in the air thanks to all those last-minute things that happen around a restaurant opening. And so, we have a not-yet-open contender in our derby today—though the offerings have been available at pop-ups and by special order. Astro takes on the airy, made-to-order beignets at Founding Farmers, served with raspberry coulis and semisweet chocolate and caramel sauces.
Before we vote: a report on yesterday’s contest. Al Dente easily secured the win against Starbucks. Its bite-size bombolini will go head to head with whichever fried-dough outlet emerges victorious today.
