A burning question of urban etiquette has paralyzed the Washingtonian newsroom: Should you say “thank you” to the driver to the driver of a city bus as you exit? It’s something most people do in Ireland and Britain, the object of a civic campaign in Seattle, and the subject of a thank-you note template on the Internet.

Okay, but what about in Washington? What is our consensus on this custom?
