Cool Down: The Week in Health

The most interesting—and quirky—health headlines of the week

Welcome to Cool Down, our Friday wrap-up of the best headlines in the health-and-fitness world. You wouldn’t believe some of the things that show up in our inbox.

First up: garlic. We all know it keeps vampires away, but did you know it apparently cures athlete’s foot, too? According to this post on the New York Times’ Well blog, garlic is a powerful antifungal, and in a study that looked at 50 athlete’s-foot sufferers, it had a 100-percent success rate. Who knew?

If you don’t trust eHarmony to tell you who to love, you could try a brain scan. A new study finds that when you’re in love, a certain part of your brain becomes active. That’s no matter who you are and what your sexual preference is. We’re all wired for love, it seems.

Even though it’s more science than health, the Ninja Turtle-lover in us just couldn’t resist this story about a newly-discovered prehistoric bird with nunchuck skills. You’ve got to read this.

We know, we know—the height of pumpkin season is behind us. But when WebMD sent us this recipe for pumpkin scones with maple-nutmeg icing, we couldn’t pass it up. And look at that: just 21 calories and zero grams of fat per serving.

And finally, we’ve saved the best for last. You know the old saying, “You are what you eat”? Well, a new study published in Cell finds that, actually, you are what your dad eats. No joke.
