Cheap Eats 2011: Ray’s the Steaks at East River

From the neon signs outside to the Al Green and Stevie Wonder record covers on the walls, Michael Landrum’s east-of-the-Anacostia steakhouse has a retro vibe. The biggest throwback? The prices.

If you order right, three people can spend around $50 and take home leftovers. That might mean passing up a T-bone steak, but lots of options still remain, including fried chicken that’s smoked over hickory wood before getting crisped in a skillet. Burgers–some of the best in town–are made from a half pound of house-ground steak. And Landrum is nearly as good with seafood as with beef–the creamy crab bisque is stocked with jumbo-lump meat.

Also good: Beer-batter fried shrimp; broiled crab royale; mac and cheese; Key-lime pie.

Open Monday through Friday for lunch and dinner, Saturday for dinner.
