Animal Exchange, 605 Hungerford Dr., Rockville; 301-424-7387; In addition to supplies for all types of pets, the shop sells locally raised small mammals and birds. Also boarding and clipping for birds.

The Ark, 601 S. Stonestreet Ave., Rockville; 240-453-0624; Proceeds benefit the Montgomery County Humane Society, which operates the shop.

The Big Bad Woof, 117 Carroll St., NW; 202-291-2404; Appealing to the "socially conscious pet," this shop sells fair-trade Kenyan collars and leads, holistic remedies, and reclaimed-fleece beds alongside pet-shop staples.

Booth Feeds, six Virginia locations including Manassas, McLean, Warrenton, and Lorton; Besides cat and dog food and supplies, Booth sells feed for horses, birds, and livestock. Popular with the Great Falls horse community.
