Things to Do

Culture Vulture

A compilation of interesting—and, most important, free—lectures, cultural events, and more throughout the week.

Monday, June 8th:
Have you ever dreamed of trapeze artists, top hats, and all things circus? Take an early lunch and head to the National Zoo—the 11 AM Elephant Training Demo might make you rethink that desk job. Admission is free, and visitor information can be found here

Tuesday, June 9th:
Hear political satirist P.J. O’Rourke read from and discuss Driving Like Crazy, his collection of essays about the American automobile, at Politics and Prose (5015 Connecticut Ave., NW; 202-364-1919) at 7 PM. Free.

Wednesday, June 10th:
The “music in pictures” theme of 2009’s NoMa Summer Screen series means that the weekly free movie screenings held in the lot adjacent to the New York Avenue Metro station will be sure to get your body moving. This week, experience the peculiar musical evolution of Bob Dylan with Martin Scorsese’s No Direction Home. Bring a well-stocked cooler and comfy lawn chairs to make the evening more enjoyable. 7 PM.

Thursday, June 11th:
Get out of the office and stretch your legs at Woodrow Wilson Plaza with free lunchtime concerts. Recall impromptu a cappella sessions of your college days with the music of Reverb from noon to 1:30. The plaza is located at 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest.

Friday, June 12th:
Feeling patriotic? Reserve a spot for the 8:45 PM Marine Corps Evening Parade. This 75-minute performance of music and precision marching is an excellent post-dinner activity for visiting veteran grandparents and kids with big military dreams. Although the event is free, guests arriving after 8 PM are not guaranteed seating, so make sure to get to the Marine Barracks (Eighth and I sts., SE) on time. Call 202-433-6060 for reservations, which are required.

Saturday, June 13th:
It’s Capital Pride week in Washington, and the annual gay-pride parade is occurring from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. We recommend nabbing a spot by the reviewing stand on P Street between 14th and 15th streets for deejay entertainment and a good view of the floats. The street festival on Sunday goes from 11 to 6 on Pennsylvania Avenue downtown. Visit www.capitalpride.org for details.Sunday, June 14th:
Perfect your downward-dog position at Lululemon Athletica’s free yoga class from 10 to 11 AM. The weekly session is taking place at the Logan Circle branch (1461 P St., NW). Bring your own mat and arrive at least ten minutes early—the room tends to fill up fast. Call 202-518-4075 for more information.
