Travis, the Scottish band once heralded as the next Radiohead and later maligned as a mediocre, cheesy facsimile of Radiohead, has been around for more than a decade, releasing a new album, Ode to J. Smith, just last year, although it went largely unnoticed.
The band’s popularity has steadily waned since The Invisible Band, its blend of pleasant alt-rock songs borrowed and ultimately perfected for mass consumption by bands such as Coldplay and Keane. Yet Travis has stuck around—and so have the fans who, like us, choose to see past the band’s shortcomings. Great lyricists the guys are not (“Sing,” anyone?), and their flair for the overdramatic gets the best of them more often than not. But when lead singer Fran Healy gets it right, you get soaring songs such as ‘Why Does It Always Rain on Me,” which resonate because of their sincerity and emotion.
Below, we’ve picked a couple of our favorite Travis songs, including the band’s well-known cover of Britney Spears’s “Baby One More Time.” (To check out the band's recent cover of Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl," click here.)
