Where & When: What to Do Tonight

An opera that hits close to home and the start of a unique lecture series

The Music on . . . Photography series begins tonight at the National Geographic Society. The series showcases the connection between photography and music. First up is singer/songwriter Neko Case, who’s chatting with Juliet Blake from the National Geographic Channel. Later sessions feature Ben Folds (December 3) and Andy Summers (December 4). Tickets ($20) are available here. 7:30.

The Fairmont Washington, D.C. is hosting its annual tree-lighting ceremony. The hotel’s Crystal Garden is decorated with trees, lights, and animated reindeer. There’s a performance by the Georgetown Visitation Madrigals, hot cocoa, and card decorating. Free, but all are encouraged to bring an unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots. 5 PM.

The town of Reston has been immortalized in song with Reston: The Opera, created and performed by the Squonk Opera. This civic celebration also includes interviews with residents and art created by local students. It’s at the Reston Community Center at 8. Buy tickets ($15 to $30) here.
