We’ll blog about incredible weight-loss stories and take you behind the scenes with some of Washington’s biggest sports stars. Plus, we’re putting together all kinds of handy guides, such as the best running routes in the area, how to choose the right workout shoes, and more.

Why now, you ask? Because it’s the start of a new year, and we know a lot of you are kicking it off with resolutions to be healthy and fit in 2011. Let us help you. Bookmark this page—and while you’re at it, follow us on Twitter—and check back every day for fresh content to help keep you motivated.

We know what you’re thinking: How can a blog get me to the gym? Well, maybe it’ll help to get to know us—you know, accountability and all that. I’m Emily, and I’ll be the main voice you’ll hear from. I’ve been an athlete all my life. Growing up, I was more likely to be found playing touch football with the neighborhood boys than dressing up Barbies. Around age eight, I did a year of ballet and gymnastics but quit after I told my parents those activities were too girlie. No joke.

In high school I played field hockey and basketball and ran track; there was nothing better than working up a good sweat after a long day at school. College was when I discovered the gym and, with it, the treadmill. I can’t tell you how many hours I spent running on that thing. Looking back, I don’t know how I managed. I can hardly stand 20 minutes on a treadmill anymore.

These days, I run outside. Last year I completed my first two races—both in Philadelphia, where I’m from—and this year I have plans for three more. First up: the SunTrust National Half Marathon right here in DC March 26.

I’d love to learn more about you and your own health-and-fitness goals. Even better, I want to know what you want to read—what will bring you back here everyday and inspire you to leave comments, Tweet, and share this blog with your friends. Feel free to e-mail me at wellbeing@washingtonian.com with story ideas or just to say hi. I’d love to hear from you.
