Today isn’t just a celebration of the Irish—it’s also the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. Socci Italian Kitchen & Bar (2800 S. Potomac Ave., Arlington) is serving Italian wines and hors d’oeuvres, plus Irish beers and music, from 4 to 8; no cover.

Support women artists at Soar With the Swans at the National Museum for Women in the Arts. There'll be poetry, a staged reading of a short play, and a screening of Sis, a documentary about relationships between sisters. 2 to 3:30; free with museum admission ($10).

Friday, March 18
The true story of a brothel comes to life in the musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, performed by the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington DC. Need we say more? At Lisner Auditorium through March 20. Buy tickets ($30 to $50) at Seat Advisor.

Artist Jen Besemer creates works of art with hidden meanings and camouflaged images. Welcome her and her show, “Fastidious Travelers,” to DC with a reception at Dolcezza Gelato's Dupont Circle location (1704 Connecticut Ave., NW), hosted by the Fridge. Mention the gallery and score a free scoop of gelato. 8 PM; no cover.

Need a little more Britney in your life? Head to the Green Lantern (1335 Green Ct., NW) for the bar's Siren dance party, featuring the tunes of Ms. Spears. 10 PM; $5 cover.

Saturday, March 19
Spend a Saturday admiring the latest in home-and-garden design at the fifth annual Home and Garden Show at Fair Oaks Mall. Vendors include painters, roofers, and remodelers, plus a life-size garden created by Merrifield Garden Center. Through March 27; open Monday through Saturday 10 to 9:30, Sunday 11 to 6.

The Fighting Jamesons cover the best of Irish rock, including Flogging Molly and the Dropkick Murphys. At the State Theatre, 9 PM; buy tickets ($12) at the venue’s site.

Iranian-American Maz Jobrani brings his self-deprecating shtick to the Warner Theatre. Jobrani pokes fun at his heritage and a variety of stereotypes. Get tickets ($39 to $49) at Ticketmaster; 7:30.

Artist Mauricio Murillo creates fun and colorful art using . . . gummy bears? His funny photos of the colorful critters and a sample of his street art are on display at the Art Whino Gallery. The opening reception starts at 8; no cover.

Sunday, March 20
Spend a Sunday with the Bluths at the Arrested Development viewing party at Arlington Cinema ’N' Drafthouse. Besides the best episodes from the too-short three seasons, there'll be plenty of frozen bananas, a chicken dance-off, and a tribute band. Starts at 7:20 PM; purchase tickets ($12) at the venue’s Web site.

It’s your last chance to see Helen Hayes Award winner Bernadine Mitchell in His Eye Is on the Sparrow, closing today at MetroStage. The musical tells the story of the troubled life of actress and singer Ethel Waters. Get tickets ($45 to $50) at Box Office Tickets.
