Acupuncture, a Cupcake Run, and Ethnic Dance: Fit Fun

Upcoming health-and-fitness events to keep you moving

Saturday, April 9
If you’ve ever been curious about acupuncture, head to the Acupuncture Happy Hour at Lil Omn Yoga (4830 V St., NW), sponsored by Capitol Wellness. The event, which focuses on stress relief, is meant to introduce acupuncture novices to the treatment. Despite the name, no alcohol will be served, but there’ll be free child care (which should make moms happy, anyway). $40; register by calling 202-248-6304.

Sunday, April 10

Need an excuse to eat sweets? Here’s one: the Cupcake Run in Frederick. Now in its second year, the 5K race benefits the organization Cakes for Cause, which helps kids in foster care transition to adulthood. Race participants are encouraged to dress up like cupcakes (seriously) and will be rewarded at the end of the race with—what else?—a cupcake. The race begins at 8:30 at Monocacy Village Park (409 Delaware Rd.). Online registration is closed, but you can register the day of the event for $20.

The Runnin’ for a Chance 5K Run-Walk benefits local nonprofit Fair Chance, which aids DC youth. The race starts (9 AM) and finishes at American University and includes food and prizes. Registration is $20 through April 9 or $25 the day-of. Register here.

The Burke Rockstar 8K Run benefits the Celebrate Cherie Scholarship Fund in honor of physical therapist Cherie Yadao, who died of a rare cancer in 2009. The fund assists other physical-therapy students. The race starts at 8 at Burke Shopping Center and runs through the center of town, with a celebration to follow. Register here.

Thursday, April 14
Joy of Motion Dance Center’s Move program, a lineup of drop-in classes, is aimed at getting you moving and shaking even if you can’t make a regular class commitment. Today’s offering is Afro-Brazilian Cuban dance for all levels. Participants will learn flexibility exercises as well as traditional and contemporary dances. 6:30 to 7:30 at the Friendship Heights location (5207 Wisconsin Ave., NW). Visit the Web site for more information and a complete schedule.

Spend an evening working out and having fun at the ladies-only Fit Night Out at Love night club (1350 Okie St., NE). Planned fitness classes include everything from ribbon dancing and pole aerobics to the more traditional yoga and Zumba. After your workout, indulge in a massage or a cocktail or two and shop for new workout gear. All fitness levels are welcome. Registration is currently $40, but it increases as the event approaches. Enter the code “getfit” at checkout for a discount. Register here. 7 to 11.
