For the second year in a row, a play that gained early recognition in Washington has won the Pulitzer Prize for drama.
The 2010 winner, Next to Normal, with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, was developed largely at Arena Stage after an earlier off-Broadway run. The musical about a woman with mental illness then went on to Broadway, where it won three Tony Awards.
And as we all learned Monday, the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for drama went to Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris. It too has a strong Washington connection, having been staged last spring by Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company.
“I am beyond thrilled by the Pulitzer’s recognition of Clybourne Park and proud that Woolly Mammoth played a role in the early life of this great play,” says Woolly artistic director Howard Shalwitz.
Prior to the Pulitzer Prizes, Woolly Mammoth had announced plans to remount its production in July.
