Sunday marks the start of DC Yoga Week, now in its sixth year. The event kicks off with a free yoga session near the Washington Monument this Sunday, May 15, from 1:30 to 4:30 and ends with a yoga flash mob at John Marshall Park on Saturday, May 21, from 10 to 11 AM.
In between, yogis can take advantage of free and $5 yoga classes at area studios. Participating studios include Bikram Yoga Dupont, Flow Yoga Center, Circle Yoga, Tranquil Space, and Capitol Hill Yoga.
Sunday’s kickoff event at the Washington Monument features sessions for all age levels. From 1:30 to 2:30, there’s a special yoga-and-dance session for kids, featuring drummers from the Young Women’s Drumming Empowerment Project. From 2:30 to 3:15, it’s an all-levels class, and from 3:15 to 3:30, an acroyoga demonstration, a two-person practice that marries gymnastics moves with yoga. Another all-levels class runs from 3:30 to 4:30, accompanied by live drums.
