More Guns Being Confiscated on Metro; Washington Home Prices Are Up: Morning Links

Must-reads from around Washington

Huma Abedin Reportedly Pregnant: The wife of embattled New York Representative Anthony Weiner is reportedly pregnant with the couple's first child, according to the New York Times. And just when you thought Weinergate couldn't get any sadder. Abedin is a longtime aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Harry Thomas, Jr. Steps Down From Committee: Despite at first vowing not to resign from his powerful role as chairman of the DC Council's economic development committee, Ward 5's Harry Thomas, Jr. did just that late on Wednesday, in an announcement that came via Council Chairman Kwame Brown, the Post reports. Thomas stands accused of embezzling most of a $400,000 earmark designated for youth baseball and spending it on, among other things, an Audi SUV and a number of luxury golfing trips. The Council's Committee of the Whole will take over Thomas's portfolio for the time being, though councilman Vincent Orange is, of course, already vying for the job.

More Guns Being Confiscated on Metro: The Examiner's Kytja Weir reports that Metro Transit Police are confiscating more and more firearms on the transit system. Police recovered 65 weapons in 2010, a big increase over the 21 firearms seized in 2009.

Washington Home Prices Are Up: The Washington area's home prices in May outperformed the rest of the nation by an awful lot, especially considering how weak the real estate market is in other areas, the Washington Business Journal reports. The quarter-over-quarter gain in housing prices was 4.5 percent, with prices up 4.9 percent from a year ago, the best performance in the nation.

Hot Days, Hot Cars: With high temperatures and heat advisories expected to continue for days, WMATA is struggling to keep its rail cars with working AC, according to this report from WUSA9. So no, you're not crazy if it seems like you've just been unlucky lately in getting stuck on a hot car. Yesterday the transit agency reported having 45 to 50 Metro cars without working air conditioning.
