Sweat with Lawyers, Journos, and Dogs: Fit Fun

This weekend’s brimming with get-off-the-couch activities

Have you ever had your kidneys checked? The American Kidney Fund is hosting a free health-screening fair at Nationals Stadium today as part of its Steps that Count two-mile walkathon. The screenings, which take 15 minutes to complete, are available for anyone 18 and over. They check on heart and kidney health and indicators of diabetes, among other health measures. The screenings run from 8 AM to 2 PM. Starting at 10, there will be cooking and fitness demos, food samples, family activities, and more.

The National Press Club’s Beat the Deadline 5K gets underway this morning at 7:30. The race raises funds for the Press Club’s Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library, which provides classes and events for working journalists and scholarships for rising stars. The course takes runners from downtown DC to Capitol Hill and back. Stop by the National Press Club on Friday from noon to 7 to register, or register on race day from 6:15 to 7:15 AM. Registration is $40.

Because journalists shouldn’t have all the fun, the Lawyers Have a Heart 10K starts at 7:30 AM in Georgetown. The race starts at Washington Harbour (3000 K St., NW) and runs along the Potomac, heading up the Whitehurst Freeway and along Canal Road and back. You can register ($45) at the Pacers store near Logan Circle from 9 AM to 2 PM on Friday. The race raises money for the American Heart Association.

The Washington Area Bicyclist Association’s Bike Fest is Saturday evening from 8 PM to midnight. The fundraiser, which supports the area cycling community, includes carnival games, a silent auction and raffle, sideshow performances, live music, dancing, and more. The centerpiece of the evening is a Bike Build contest, in which three local bike shops will reveal custom bikes built for less than $250. The crowd will vote on a favorite, and then the bikes will be auctioned off. The event takes place at the Crystal City Shops in Arlington. Tickets ($45) can be purchased until 5 PM on Friday here. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Here’s a race you don’t have to get up early for: the Potomac River Running Twilight Festival Four Miler in Ashburn, which starts at 7 PM. The event kicks off a night of live music, food, and drink, benefitting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The race starts and ends near the Golds Gym in Ashburn (20099 Ashbrook Place). You can register online here ($30) or in person on race day ($35) from 5 to 6:45 PM at the race site.

Dog owners can bring their pups to the Critters for the Cure 5K Walk/Fun Run, raising funds for women with breast cancer. The walk through Gaithersburg begins at the Kentlands Square Shopping Center near Fleet Feet Sports. The run costs $25; register here.

Another event for dog owners: Doga yoga at DC’s Rose Park (P and 26th sts., NW). The hourlong yoga session, which starts at 11 AM, caters to canines and their human companions. It’ll be run by teachers from Tranquil Space yoga studio, and proceeds—it costs $10 to participate—go to the Washington Humane Society. Reserve your spot here.

Interested in trying a triathlon? The Nation’s Triathlon Tri Clinic Series can you help you get ready to run, bike, and swim. The five-clinic series costs $100, or you can do a single clinic for $25. The clinics start today with strength, flexibility, and plyometrics. Other sessions will focus on running (June 25); open-water swimming (July 16); transitions (August 6); and a bike-and-run session (August 20), called a “brick” workout in triathlon parlance. Sunday, June 12
The Air Force Cycling Classic’s Crystal Cup and Crystal Ride runs through Arlington today. The noncompetitive Crystal Ride, designed for amateur cyclists, gets underway at 7:30 AM. The 12.5K course goes through Crystal City and around the Pentagon and Air Force Memorial. At 11:30, the pro race—the Crystal Cup—starts at 2100 Crystal Drive, near the Crystal City Shops. Cyclists will ride a 2K circuit, averaging speeds of more than 25 miles per hour. You can register ($50) in person for the Crystal Rides at the Crystal City Marriott on Friday or Saturday, or at the starting line on race day.

Virginia Yoga Week kicks off today and runs through Sunday, June 19. During the promotion, participating Northern Virginia yoga studios will offer free and $5 classes. There will also be special events, such as outdoor sessions, throughout the week. Details are here.
