MUSIC: Today’s forecast may call for clouds, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a little sunshine with Richie Spice and New Kingston at the State Theatre. Spice, one of the most highly regarded reggae singers of recent years, is joining forces with reggae crossover band New Kingston for a night of soulful melodies and uplifting anthems. Tickets ($20) can be purchased at the event Web site or ($25) at the door. Doors open at 7 PM, Show begins at 8.
FILM: Don’t miss tonight’s screening of Slackistan at the Whittemore House. Set in Islamabad, Pakistan, the film follows a group of privileged and westernized twentysomethings as they waste their days flitting from party to party. But as political turmoil beseeches the rest of their country, the young adults begin to reevaluate their relationships and life choices. Tickets ($20) can be purchased online until June 27 or ($25) at the door. 6:30 PM.
SINGING: Join community activist Soo Hong at the U Street Busboys and Poets as she discusses and signs her new book, A Cord of Three Strands: A New Approach to Parent Engagement in Schools. The ethnographic study explores the Logan Square Neighborhood Association, a grassroots organization in Chicago that advocates parent engagement in low-income areas. There will also be a screening of the short film Parent Power. Free, 6 PM.
THEATER: It’s opening night of The History of Kisses, David Cale’s new one-man show at Studio Theatre. In the 90-minute play, a writer sequesters himself in an oceanfront motel to finish a collection of romantic tales, only to find himself drawn into the sexual goings-on around him.
