We’re Number One! Morning Links

Must-reads from around Washington

We’re Number One! A new study names Washington as the home of the worst drivers in America. But if you ask anyone from Maryland, they’ll say it’s because people from Virginia obviously cannot drive. Likewise Virginians will tell anyone that listens that you’re just taking your life into your own hands by driving with all the crazies in Maryland. DC is just caught in the middle, right?

Stiff One: Springfield rock club Jaxx is suing ’90s one-hit wonders Nelson, due to the band’s slanderous allegations that the club stiffed the band $3,500 of their $7,500 guarantee after a sparsely attended gig in 2008. Honestly, I think the bigger news here is that Nelson could merit a guarantee that big for a club show just three years ago.

Ready For Some Football? The Redskins defeated the visiting Buccaneers 29-24 last night in the team’s preseason finale. John Beck looked shaky in his time under center, going just 10 to 21 for 108 yards and an interception in the end zone.Rex Grossman was given the night off, ensuring the starting quarterback debate will rage on for a few more days. Also, it looks like the final RB spot will come down to rookie Evan Royster and incumbent Ryan Torain.

Scattered and Smothered: The best thing we read yesterday? One of the Fed’s metrics to rate the aftermath of a natural disaster like Hurricane Irene is the “Waffle House Index.”

Briefly Noted: Local band Deleted Scenes gets a 7.8 on Pitchfork for their new album Young People’s Church of the Air . . . a Gray appointee voted in DC even though she lived in Maryland . . . Best photo you’ll see all day: Dog Cooler!
