4 Winter Training Programs at Local Running Stores

With weekly ground runs and coaches, these programs will train you for your next big spring race.

Running when it’s frigid outside may not sound appealing, but winter training is extremely important if you have a big race planned come spring. But when you can’t convince yourself to bundle up and hit the streets on your own, a running group can help you stay motivated. Local running stores and clubs have a variety of options beginning this November.

Fleet Feet Run Fit Training Program
Location: Fleet Feet Sports (1841 Columbia Rd., NW)

The Run Fit training programs are designed for beginner, intermediate, and advanced runners. Coaches will work with you to develop the best plan for your current level of fitness. The marathon training program is an 18-week running program starting on Saturday, November 10. The Run Fit Half-Marathon Training Program is a 16-week running program starting on Saturday, November 24. The program includes weekly long runs, track workouts, weekly tempo/group runs, happy hours, seminars, and pace coaching. Register for $159.

DC Road Runners Club Programs
Location: Georgetown Running Company (3401 M St., NW)

DC Road Runners offers spring marathon and half-marathon training programs targeting the Rock ’n’ Roll USA race in March. The 18-week marathon training program ($90) starts Saturday, November 17. The 14-week half marathon training program ($70) starts in December. The programs include weekly long runs, track workouts, happy hours, seminars, and pace coaching.

Pacers Distance Training Program
Locations: Pacers Store (Logan Circle and Arlington)

The Pacers Distance Training Program is a year-round program that you can start at any time. The program is designed around the training philosophies of American University coach Matt Centrowitz (whose son recently competed in the Olympics). Expect a structured yet flexible training schedule with access to enthusiastic coaches and opportunities to meet and run with other runners your speed. The program includes weekly long runs, track workouts, weekday runs, seminars, and pace coaching. $150 for six months.

Potomac River Running Training Program
Locations: Potomac River Running stores (Arlington, Rockville, Reston, and DC)

The PR winter/spring distance training program starts the weekend of December 1. A variety of programs are offered, including half-marathon, marathon, speed and conditioning, and interval training. The program includes weekly long runs, track workouts, weekday runs, seminars, and pace coaching. $159 for 16 weeks.
