November Reader Deals: Treats for Pet Owners

Save on food, dog walking, and other pet care with this month’s exclusive discounts.

Stylish dog beds by Bowsers are 20 percent off this month at Wylie Wagg.

Americans spent $51 billion last year on pets, an all-time
high, according to the American Pet Products Association. Food and vet
costs accounted for 65 percent of that, while boarding, grooming, and pet
sitting totaled $3.8 billion, an increase of almost 8 percent from the
year before. To save you money, we’ve rounded up some deals. Unless
otherwise noted, the offers are available when you mention The
at the time of reservation or purchase or when you use
the online code Washingtonian.

Mutts Rule

From premium food and treats to pretty collars, leashes, and
more, Metro Mutts has featured unusual pet gear since 2009. This month,
when you spend $50 you get a $10 gift card good for your next visit. 407

Tempting Treats

When Burke residents Alison and Douglas Burtt rescued a puggle
(a pug-beagle mix) that they named Chester, he was underweight and had
allergies. Not only did Chester eat up Alison’s homemade treats—made with
ingredients from Virginia—but family and friends began requesting them for
their pets. Dog River Biscuit Company was born, and with it Chester got a
job as official spokespuggle. His face adorns the company’s bone-shaped
biscuit packs, which normally sell for $18 for a three-pack (shipping is
about $6). This month, readers can get the three-pack for $15.

Vacation for Your Pooch

You want to make sure your dog is in good hands when you take a
trip. The new website DogVacay acts like Airbnb for pets: Dogs can stay at
other people’s homes for set fees, or you can sign up to host one for the
weekend. Owners post profiles that describe their boarding conditions,
other pets in the house, rates, and more. Through December 31, readers get
$15 off total boarding (which typically starts at $15 a day).

Puppy Playtime

Run Around Hound owner Ashley Kennedy is bonded and insured to
care for your pet while you’re at work or on vacation. This month, she’s
offering 10 percent off midday dog walking weekdays between 10 and 2 for
Washingtonian readers in Ashburn, Brambleton, Leesburg, and
Sterling. Rates typically start at $15 per walk. 703-651-2951.

Good Dog

Understanding your pet’s behavior can sometimes seem like a
lost cause. That’s where Good Dog Workshop comes in. Home trainers can
help decipher behavior mysteries, battle dominance issues, or help
formerly abused pets regain trust. This month, enjoy a 15-percent discount
on the first session for new customers, normally $150 and up.
