Only Three Weeks Until the Peak of Cherry Blossoms

Here’s an excellent sign of spring, even with snow in the forecast: The National Park
Service predicts that the cherry blossoms on the Tidal Basin will be at their peak
March 26 through 30. The timing is good for the overall National Cherry Blossom Festival,
which runs from March 20 through April 14.

The National Park Service has organized a series of
“ranger-led” programs to take advantage of the festival and the blooming season,
including talks, walks,
runs, bike tours, and activities for children.

A fun fact: The trees that encircle the Tidal Basin are predominately Yoshino cherry
trees, but also include a smaller number of Akebonos. The Yoshino trees produce a
single white blossom, while the Akebono blossom has more of a pink tint.

And a tip for first-timers: While the trees are always beautiful in the daylight,
with an almost cloud-like appearance, there’s an even more magical effect at night
or early in the morning.
