Great Bars 2013: Cork

Sparkling wine and avocado toast: That’s what comes to mind
when we think about bellying up to this 14th Street favorite, where a
stylish crowd of neighborhood types jockeys for barstools on weekday
evenings. Sparklers include reasonably priced and very sippable selections
from Italy, France, and Spain. They all taste great with that
aforementioned appetizer—thin-sliced avocado atop grilled bread drizzled
with pistachio oil and sprinkled with toasted nuts. There are certainly
more elaborate selections on chef Robert Weland’s stellar small-plates
menu—but the toast is the one we can’t seem to forget. Insider tip:
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5 to 7, the bar opens off-the-list
bottles from the cellar—a chance to try some rare finds. Open Tuesday
through Sunday.
