Best Places to Work in DC: HBI

Downtown DC; 275 employees

This year, four employees celebrated their 35th anniversaries at HBI—and we assume they didn’t stay that long simply because everyone gets free parking after ten years. Staffers say they derive great satisfaction from the mission of this nonprofit, which offers career training and job placement in the building industry, mainly to at-risk youth, veterans, ex-offenders, and displaced workers. Long tenures have created a close-knit bunch. It’s also a diverse office, with quarterly potlucks of international fare. Not to say people don’t mind a little time apart—everyone telecommutes at least one day a week.

Perk: A pension contribution equaling 8 percent of an employee’s salary, plus free annual retirement planning with a financial adviser.
