Washingtonian’s Most Influential People: Bob McNally

Robert (Bob) McNally has 30 years of government and market experience as an international energy consultant, senior White House policy official, and hedge fund strategist. He is an award-winning author and the founder and president of Rapidan Energy Group, a leading Washington-based consulting firm that advises leading corporations and investors on energy markets, policy, and geopolitics. Bob and his veteran Rapidan Energy Group team specialize in integrating energy market data and analysis with seasoned geopolitical, policy, and regulatory expertise.

Bob is the author of the award-winning and acclaimed book Crude Volatility: The History and the Future of Boom-Bust Oil Prices (Columbia University Press, 2017). Daniel Yergin called Crude Volatility “an excellent biography of a world-famous character known for volatility and violent mood swings… insightful and timely,” and the Wall Street Journal called Bob “both a skillful historian and an astute analyst.”

From 2001 to 2003, Bob served in the George W. Bush White House as Special Assistant to the President on the White House National Economic Council and, in 2003, as Senior Director for International Energy on the National Security Council.

Bob frequently speaks on energy markets, energy policy, and national security, and has provided expert testimony before Congress on several occasions. He has published in Foreign Affairs and been interviewed by CNN, CNBC, The Economist, Fox Business, The Financial Times, The Washington Post, National Journal, Platts Energy Week TV, PBS’ Great Decisions In Foreign Policy series, Bloomberg News, Washington Examiner, Reuters, MEES, Petroleum Economist, Aviation Daily, and other programs and journals. He is a non-resident fellow at Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy.

Bob started his professional career in 1991 as an oil market analyst and consultant with Energy Security Analysis, Inc. In 1994, he joined Tudor Investment Corporation, where he analyzed energy markets, macroeconomic policy, and geopolitics for Tudor portfolio managers for twelve years, earning promotions to Vice President and Managing Director.

Bob earned his B.A./B.S. in Political Science and International Relations from American University and his M.A. in International Economics and Foreign Policy from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Senegal, West Africa, from 1988-1990.

Bob is married with three children. He enjoys rock and roll drumming in his off-hours and has performed in some “bipartisan” Washington DC bands. His former bandmates include both of President George W. Bush’s chiefs of staff – Andy Card and Josh Bolten – as well as Obama Administration Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman and current Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
