Rose Previte

Owner, Compass Rose, Maydan, Kirby Club, and Medina; author, Maydan: Recipes From Lebanon and Beyond

Hidden gem: Italian Cafe (7161 Lee Hwy., Falls Church).

“Italian Cafe is the most charming, go-to Italian hole in the wall that everyone needs and wants. I’ve lived in DC 20 years and just discovered it, so I don’t want others to wait so long.”

Tim Kaine

US senator from Virginia; author, Walk, Ride, Paddle: A Life Outside

Hidden gem: Donaldson Run Trail (Arlington).

“The trail follows a pleasant stream with tiny cascades and feels miles away from the bustle of DC. And I recommend canoeing at Crow’s Nest in Stafford–a beautiful marsh adjoining the Potomac. Or for more whitewater, canoe on the Rapidan and Rappahannock rivers above Fredericksburg. This day trip is as pristine as it gets.”

Hidden gem: Garden at the Franciscan Monastery (1400 Quincy St., NE).

“The garden the Franciscan Monastery is one of my favorite places to visit and stroll, especially in the spring. It feels like an escape from the city, and the mix of architecture, history, greenery, and florals makes it a beautiful place to find some peace and quiet.”
